How to Add a Collaborator to an Instagram Post

Published: October 2026 5 min read

Instagram's Collab feature lets you co-author posts and Reels with another account. The content appears on both profiles, shares engagement (likes, comments, views), and reaches both audiences. It's one of the most effective organic growth tools on the platform.

What Is an Instagram Collab Post?

A collab post is a single piece of content - a photo, carousel, or Reel - that is shared on two profiles simultaneously. Both usernames appear at the top of the post, and it shows up in both accounts' grids. All engagement is combined, so both collaborators benefit from the combined reach.

This is different from tagging, where content lives only on the original poster's profile. With collab posts, the content truly lives in both places.

How to Add a Collaborator: Step by Step

  1. Create your Instagram post, Reel, or carousel as you normally would
  2. On the final share screen (where you write your caption), tap "Tag people"
  3. At the top of the tagging screen, you'll see two tabs: "Tag People" and "Invite Collaborator" - tap Invite Collaborator
  4. Search for the account you want to collaborate with and select their profile
  5. Finish editing your caption and share the post

The other person will receive a notification and must accept the collaboration request. Once they accept, the post appears on their profile grid too.

Tips for Successful Collab Posts

  • Discuss content beforehand: Reach out to your collaborator before posting. Make sure they're on board with the content, caption, and timing
  • Choose relevant partners: Collaborate with accounts in your niche or adjacent niches for maximum relevance to both audiences
  • Leverage complementary audiences: The biggest benefit is reaching each other's followers, so partner with accounts whose audience would find your content valuable
  • Share multiple formats: Collab Reels often perform better than static posts because Instagram currently prioritizes video content

Important Things to Know

  • You can invite up to 1 collaborator per post (some accounts may have access to multiple collaborators)
  • The collaborator must accept the invitation before the post appears on their profile
  • Either collaborator can remove themselves from the post at any time
  • Both accounts share the same engagement metrics - there's only one like count, comment thread, and view count
  • The feature works with feed posts, carousels, and Reels
